Modelling of dairy cow feeding system to assess farms' adaptability to technical changes

Abstract : Grasslands are now being acknowledged for their multifunctional role. But the intensification of livestock production has led to a decrease in grassland use. This trend is less pregnant when cheese production occurs within Geographical Indication labels. Indeed, farmers’ practices are subject to stricter specifications, with particular attention to grass use in the dairy cow diets. Accession to cheese production under GI specifications questions the adaptability of the farms and farmers’ practices. Animal feeding is strongly interlinked with land use, resulting in a coordinated set of grassland and livestock practices. This set leads to a particular consistency of the feeding system which we use to assess farms’ adaptability to technical changes. Two projects were conducted in French mountainous regions. Grassland and herd management’s practices were recorded in 37 dairy farms and computed with Multivariate Correspondence Analysis to define feeding system’s patterns. They were a sound base to assess farms’ adaptability to 4 levels of specifications’requirement: maize or grass silage abandonment, and milk yield or concentrate limitation.Adaptability was assessed by technical changes necessary to adapt the feeding system to be in accordance with specifications’requirements. The main factors explaining the feeding system‘s patterns were the earliness of grass use for grazing and cutting (early vs. late), the period of milk production (spring vs. winter). These factors defined the room for manoeuvre of the technical changes. Also we discriminated feeding system’s patterns through a production trade off between grass and milk intensification. Each pattern’s position in this four-level trade off defines the room for manoeuvre. The traditional feeding system is adapted to stricter specifications;other patterns can require changing of grassland and/or livestock intensifications to be in accordance with levels of specifications’ requirement.
