Overview of anaerobic digestion limitation: how can they be overview by feedstock pretreatments

Résumé

After being used for decades as a wastewater treatment methods, anaerobic digestion is facing a fast development in Europe to produce renewable energy from a wide range of organic wastes. Biogas is converted into electricity and heat or, after upgrading, is injected into the natural gas grid or used as biofuel. This biological process is supported by complex microbial consortia and consists in four stages: hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis. In the case of easily biodegradable feedstocks such as food waste, methanogenisis is the rate-limiting step and the process can be inhibited by volatile fatty acids accumulation. In contrast, hydrolysis step is the rate-limiting step of anaerobic digestion of most of solid wastes. This presentation will discuss the characteristics of the main solid feedstocks used in anaerobic digestion and the subsequent limits of their anaerobic digestion. Feedstocks that will be adressed are sewage sludge, food waste, fatty waste, organic fraction of municipal solid waste, lignocellulosic residues, manures and algae. The most promising pretreatments to enhance anaerobic digestion performance will be presented for each substrate.
