The genome response of Drosophila suzukii during its worldwide invasion

Résumé

In their introduced range, populations of invasive species are likely to have successfully adapted, over a short period of time, to a wide range of biotic and abiotic conditions they may not have experienced in their area of origin. They thus represent attractive evolutionary situations to characterize the genomic basis of adaptation to novel environments, a major challenge in modern evolutionary biology. Drosophila suzukii is an agricultural pest insect species native to Asia that has successfully invaded, since the early 21st century and in only a decade, three continents (Europe, North and South America), and several tropical islands including La Reunion and Hawaii. To identify genomic selection signals associated with invasion and potential footprints of environmental pressure, we have sequenced 22 population-specific pools of individual DNA (Pool-Seq) representative of the current worlwide genetic diversity of the species in both its native and invasive ranges. Using recent methodological developments implemented in the computer program BayPass, we conducted association analyses with the invasive versus native status of the genotyped populations and with bioclimatic variables corresponding to the geographical locations of the populations. Capitalizing on the detailed genomic resources available in Drosophila melanogaster, its sister species, we will further perform a detailed annotation of the associated variants in order to identify physiological pathways involved during the invasive process. At the time of writing this abstract, analyses are still ongoing but conclusions of this work will be presented and discussed during the meeting.
