Quelles stratégies territoriales face à l'émergence de nouvelles règles du commerce international ? : Le cas de la banane dans l'espace de production Caraïbe

Abstract : The economic crisis in the banana market leads to reconsider the capacity of protected production areas to restructure. Considering the special regulatory regime for the European banana market, we attempted to understand the trends in banana production in two major producer areas of the Caribbean Region, i.e. Martinique (European region) and Saint Lucia (ACP country). Our study deals with the strategies implemented by farmers in response to new competitive situations. It shows that banana producers organise and co-ordinate in a diversity of ways. Applying an econometric analysis to evaluate the production choices made by the jarmers, we confirmed that they internalise differently the production problem that needs to be solved. However in neither case does this internalisation induce a process of mutation/specification in the areas considered.
