Correlations between structural parameters in vascular plants - quantitative assessment of the Durian Theory
Correlations entre paramètres structuraux chez les plantes vasculaires - essai de vérification quantitative de la théorie du Durian
Résumé
The hypothetic existence of a correlation network between some parameters determining higher plant shape is tested with some simple statistical methods on Homalanthus populneus (EUPHORBIACEES) some Eicus species (MQRACEES) and some Macaranga species (EUPHORBIACEES). Three parameters are selected here: Lamina area (SL) Lenght (LE) and Section area (SSE) of the internode associated. The two correlations tested here SL-SSE and SL-LE are positive. But SL-SSE shows a better connection. From these three basic parameters, two others one were created volume (VE) and shape (LE/SSE) of the internode. Then we find that if the SL-VE correlation is positive, on the other hand SL-LE/SSE is negative. In other words, the internode-volume decrease, correlated to lamina area decrease, goes with the internode thinning. Then we conclude that variation in the size of the internode accompanies a change in its shape.
