Dry-purification by natural adsorbents of indian mustard seed oil ethyl biodiesel and biolubricants: Toward a low-cost and environmentally-friendly production route

Résumé

Dry-purification of the crude bioproducts; ethyl biodiesel and biolubricants, derived from Indian mustard was conducted using natural mineral (clay) and organic (plant issue) adsorbents to define the optimal procedure in terms of temperature, contact time and number of treatment cycles. Adsorbent characterization and the quality of the biofuel and biolubricants, evaluated before and after dry-purification, led to the conclusion that Montmorillonite clay and finely ground Indian mustard stems (particle size of 100 to 710 m) without further pyrolysis or carbonization treatment were the best performing adsorbents among the eight tested. Combined with the dry-purification procedure (35-45°C, 20 min, single treatment cycle), and further purification by bubble-washing and vacuum distillation for the biolubricant, the final liquid bioproducts succeeded in approaching or even satisfying specifications in terms of esters, contaminants and functional properties. The hybrid-purification adopted for the biolubricant presents the advantage of reducing significantly water consumption compared to wet-purification. This work highlights the potential of an Indian mustard focused biorefinery contributing to a green and circular economy in tune with the farming world and illustrating the bioeconomy's role in the post pandemic economic recovery.
