How access and dynamics in the use of territorial resources shape agroecological transitions in crop-livestock systems: Learnings and perspectives

Abstract : The study of agroecological transitions of farms and territories requires to observe the conditions and levers for deep and radical changes. How transition actors impulse and organize such changes is a crucial point in the support and development of agroecology. The multiple resources they use and those that may lack define Livestock Farming Systems (LFS) and territories’ level of transformation. Indeed, agroecological LFS are based on principles such as self-sufficiency, promotion of local ecosystems, and the management of services throughout territories (landscape, biodiversity conservation, etc.). In order to fulfil those principles at best, one needs access to the area’s resources. To begin, let us examine the combination of various resources that operate in agro-ecological transitions. To do so, we first need to build a theoretical framework allowing the description of transitions in LFS according to their territorial embeddedness. Then we will focus on four case studies in which LFS “archetypes” illustrate different levels of agroecological transitions taking into account not only economics, but also natural, technical and social assets driven by each archetype. On this basis, we suggest possible developments for supporting agroecological transitions of LFS. This overview will permit us to support better LFS’ agroecological transitions. To conclude, we will address the deterministic or open-ended dimension of these transitions.
