The park-wardens and the masters of animals
Les gardes-parc et les maîtres des animaux
Résumé
Based on an actual dialogue between the director of a Bolivian protected area and the members of a Yuracaré community on the possible causes of the scarcity of game, this article reflects on the contrasting premises of two ways of conceiving animal protection. By highlighting the mutual opacity of the perspectives of the parties involved, it assesses the implicit projection that the bearers of one perspective are led to make on those of the other, thus delineating the unspoken, the pretense and the distortions that can characterise the relationship between the administration of a protected area and its human inhabitants.
