Abstract

Monitoring of antimicrobial use on French pig farms from 2010-2016 and 2019 using INAPORC panels The Ecoantibio plan was a success: pig exposure to antibiotics decreased by 41% from 2012-2017, far exceeding the initial goal of a 25% decrease. This study's objective was to understand the main areas of reduction in antibiotic use based on INAPORC panels, which were surveys of representative samples of farms performed in 2010, 2016 and 2019. In 2019, the INAPORC panel was based on 119 farms, randomly selected from the BDPORC database. Over the nine years, the mean number of treatment days for sows decreased by 52%, mainly in the last three years (-48%). Since 2016, premixes and powder as well as solutions decreased by 65% and 42%, respectively. The main reason for treatment remains urogenital problems (64%), mainly treated with tetracyclines. It decreased significantly for suckling piglets by 66%, with the reduction in powders and oral solutions, to 90%, with the stopping of premix use. Exposure of weaned piglets to antibiotics decreased by 78% from 2010-2019. Since 2016, however, this reduction began to slow down (-28%). Unlike all other previously Panel INAPORC, colistin is not used as a premix. Thus, it is not the antibiotic used the most during post-weaning. In fattening pigs, antibiotic use decreased by 81% from 2010-2019 and by 36% from 2016-2019. The INAPORC panel provides detailed references on antibiotic use in pig production and demonstrates the continued commitment to improving current practices.
