Abstract

San€co'Sim and GT-Direct, two tools for estimating investment and operating costs of biosecurity measures and considering the return on investment Biosecurity measures help improve animal health, but farmers perceive them as constraints that require investment or changes in practices. One way to overcome these prejudices is to estimate the investment and/or operating costs of biosecurity measures and to relate them to an improvement in the performance of the farm. Ifip has developed two tools to calculate the cost of future projects related to biosecurity measures and to estimate the return on investment due to improved technical and economic performance. San€co'Sim is an interactive web tool that estimates the costs of more than 150 biosecurity measures. Based on the minimum and maximum costs of each measure, valued from detailed quote, equipment manufacturers catalogue and quantified in experimental station, users enter a cost that they can adapt to their situations. The tool estimates total and annual expenses for implementing one or more of these measures. A total and annual cost is calculated for each project that users wish to assess. This tool is for breeders and technicians. This tool is freely available, it is enough to create an account. From a GT-Direct account, in the 'Calculate' tab, an economic calculator allows users to study scenarios that involve changes in technical or economic criteria between two equilibrium situations. By estimating technical improvements due to implementing biosecurity measures, users can thus calculate the return on investment between the situation before and after the implementation.
La mise en place de mesures de biosécurité en élevage contribue à l’amélioration de la santé des animaux. Or, ces démarches sont souvent perçues comme des contraintes nécessitant des investissements importants ou des modifications de pratiques par les éleveurs (Rojo-Gimeno et al., 2016), sans gain économique direct associé. L’un des moyens de lever ces a priori est d’estimer les coûts d’investissement et / ou de fonctionnement des mesures de biosécurité et de les mettre en relation avec une amélioration attendue des performances des animaux (Alarçon et al., 2013). L’Ifip a développé San€co’Sim, un outil permettant d’évaluer le coût de mise en place de projets liés à la biosécurité. Le lien direct de cet outil avec le calculateur de GT-Direct (Aubry et al., 2014) permet d’estimer le retour sur investissement lié à une amélioration associée des performances.
