Potential of time series of VIS images from connected static camera for decision support in vineyard

Résumé

This work proposes to study the capability of a static connected camera for monitoring a vine plant and its immediate surroundings for a grower. A low-cost prototype was developed and installed in a vineyard for a whole season. The prototype used Raspberry and Arduino technologies to control the camera and send the images to an online server. A simple interface was developed to allow users the visualization of a temporal series of images. At the end of the season, captured images were presented to a focus group of 9 experts (advisors, grower) to identify the interest and possible applications for such a sensor system. Experts identified more than 20 potential applications that included monitoring difficult-to-access fields, triggering management operations or verifying if operations were performed properly. Future developments, in terms of image processing, were also identified. Regarding the prototype, energy autonomy remained an important issue before commercial deployment. The focus group provided a roadmap for the next steps of the project including interface improvements and its ability to support operational decisions.
