A Festival of One’s Own: Residential Migration, Power Struggles and the Transformation of Political Sociability in a Periurban Village
Une fête à soi. Migrations résidentielles, luttes de pouvoir et recomposition des sociabilités politiques dans un bourg périurbain

Drawing on an ethnographic analysis of a conflict over an agricultural fair in a French town, this article presents a process of appropriation of suburban areas by mid- and upper-level employees in or close to the public sector. This appropriation is rooted in the organization of local festive sociability, closely tied to their gaining control of the town council. Reconstructing the residential and political trajectories of fair committee leaders who challenged the power of the farmers who historically dominated the event calls into question the ordinary interpretation of “rural locals” being driven out of urban outskirts by “new middle-class urbanites”. These power struggles are a confrontation of alliances between social groups and distinct political networks composed of people with diverse local ties (locals who have never left, return migration, new arrivals). This configuration is the product of the ongoing transformation of political sociability in the town that began in the early 1970s.
À partir de l’ethnographie d’un conflit autour d’une ancienne foire agricole d’un bourg de l’Ouest de la France, cet article met en évidence un processus d’appropriation des territoires périurbains par des professions intermédiaires et des cadres supérieurs proches du secteur public qui repose sur l’encadrement de leurs sociabilités festives, en relation avec la conquête du pouvoir municipal. En restituant les trajectoires résidentielles et militantes des responsables du comité ayant contesté les positions de pouvoir des agriculteurs, il interroge le grand récit de l’éviction des « ruraux autochtones » par les « nouvelles couches moyennes urbaines » dans le périurbain. Ces luttes de pouvoir opposent d’abord des fronts d’alliances entre groupes sociaux et des réseaux politiques différenciés composés de personnes aux appartenances locales plurielles (sédentarité, migrations de retour, primo-installation). Cette configuration résulte de la recomposition des sociabilités politiques dans le bourg en cours depuis le début des années 1970.
