Buffering capacity

Abstract

Buffering is the capacity to resist changes and involves mineralogical, chemical and biological processes. Some soil ecological concepts are discussed. Most of this contribution focuses on pH-buffering in soils. The roles of minerals and organic matter in maintaining soil pH are discussed. The buffering of oxido-reduction (redox) status of soils is briefly presented.
