Agronomy is distinguished from other finalised sciences by the constancy and depth of its
interrogations on history. Even if the dialogue between agronomists and historians was late
in coming. It was only after th e general crisis in the relationship between science and society
in the last years of the 20th century that a dialogue was established. Today, it allows us to
think about and share a historical epistemology of the discipline of agronomy, which is likely
to give its practitioners a greater reflexivity and acuity to face the challenges of the systemic
crisis with which we are confronted. Based on a long historical perspective, going back to
the origins of the scientification of the agronomic method, and ques tioning the successive
paradigms through which the discipline has asserted itself, this article concludes on the need
for agronomy, in the diversity of its expressions and the spaces in which it is confronted with
the issues of the present time, not to aba ndon its ambition to find a balance between
scientific rigour and social and environmental relevance, despite the new challenges posed
by the digital revolution and the affirmation of epistemological and axiological breakthrough
proposals. Through the hist ory of agronomy, the question of the scientificity and reflexivity
of the engineering relationship with the living is raised.
