Implementing a program of host genomics of key host-pathogen systems in livestock

Abstract : I will provide an overview of relevant programs set in place, particularly on the pig system, first at Parco Tecnologico Padano (Italy, since 2001) and more recently at INRA (Unité GABI, Jouy-en-Josas, since 2011).Two viral systems are considered. The Pseudorabies virus is the aetiological agent of Aujeszky’s disease in pigs and our main model system to explore the biology of miRNAs during viral latency. The Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) participates in a variety of polymicrobial syndromes and is the most important infectious pathogen in pigs worldwide. A recent integrated INRA project aims to prepare the French swine industry to the likely emergence of new pathogenic PRRSV strains. The common item of these researches is to investigate the role and relative importance of miRNAs during pathogenesis and as biomarkers of host response, in the context of an international initiative aimed at the annotation of regulatory elements of livestock genomes.
