The agricultural policy instruments implemented, in particular within the framework of the common agricultural policy (price support, coupled aid, etc.), have tended to freeze the location of supported agricultural production, without however preventing the continuation of concentration of unsupported productions. The recent modifications of these instruments therefore risk affecting the location of the productions supported and therefore raise the question of the contemporary determinants of the location of agricultural production. In this context, the main objective of this research is to analyze the economic determinants of the location of agricultural production. The thesis is based in particular on the case of a production both historically little helped by the public authorities but also subjected to strong environmental constraints. It makes it possible to examine more directly the mechanisms of the location of agricultural production excluding direct production support, i.e. those that risk being implemented in the future for the various agricultural productions following the forthcoming reforms of agricultural policies. To answer our research problem, we initially favored an approach of microeconomic modeling of the pork sector, by insisting on the spatial effects induced by the various structural changes. Secondly, we empirically assessed the impact of agglomeration externalities on Danish and French pig production, whether these externalities are pecuniary (access to input and output markets), technical (use of a spatial shift) or environmental (nuisances and environmental regulations). Thirdly, we tested the role of these same determinants of location on the individual performance of the firms concerned in order to examine whether the effects were identical to those observed at the aggregate level. The study of the spatial concentration of agricultural activities allows us to shed light on the potential effects of changes in political instruments, and in particular of those which have the most tendency to freeze locations. We then show the predominant role on the agglomeration of production and the performance of firms of technological externalities, considered here through neighborhood interactions, while upstream and downstream market relations have little influence on the agglomeration and performance. Conversely, the overall effect of environmental constraints and regulations plays a dispersive role on production, but this is not sufficiently intense to counteract the effect of agglomeration economies. Overall, however, these environmental variables do not alter the individual performance of firms, suggesting that they react to these constraints by improving their technical efficiency.
