Modèles de la dynamique des peuplements forestiers : articulation entre les niveaux de l’arbre et du peuplement. Applications à la sylviculture des hêtraies

Abstract : The dynamic models of forest stands are an important tool for helping management decisions : with simulations, it is possible to evaluate and compare the stand response to alternative silvicultural treatments. In the even aged Beech (Fagus silvatica L.) stands under study, the silvicultural actions (thinnings) control stand density ; due to the selection among the individual trees composing the stand, its composition and structure are also altered. To account for this silviculture induced diversity of the forest systems, a model has to describe them in enough detail and must be of flexible use. This study aims at satisfying these two requirements through the modelling of each individual tree inside the stand (distance independant individual tree model). When long term predictions are to be done, a major criterion for assessing the quality of complex models is the realism of their behaviour ; to ensure that the models posess a satisfactory behaviour, we relied on the fact that the main characteristics of stand level dynamics are well known, now : the so called “Eichhorn law”, an empirical rule, is assumed to reflect a regulation of growth and development on a large scale. We tried to model individual tree growth so that the formulations are coherent with this preliminary stand level knowledge. The modelling effort is illustrated with several particular models, and we put the stress on the approach combining successive phases : biological, empirical and mathematical. The models are understood as a synthesis of former knowledge ; they also allow the identification of still unsolved questions and suggest new experiments to be undertaken : development of stand structure through time, effect of low densities on stand and tree growth, evolution of social hierarchies, practical and methodological consequences of the spatial heterogeneities. The proposed models are compared with a process based formulation, traducing the basic physiological mechanisms inside plant populations. The predictive performance of the model finally chosen is discussed, at both tree and stand levels and in various contexts of operationnal use.
