La production de lait maternel peut-elle être modulée par une supplémentation nutritionnelle en fenugrec ou en arginine ? : étude expérimentale chez la rate allaitante

Abstract : Because of its benefits for the health of mother and child, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended by the World Health Organization up to the age of 6 months. However, the global prevalence of breastfeeding remains relatively low, partly due to early cessation of breastfeeding caused by mothers’ perception to produce insufficient milk for optimal growth of their babies. Even if there are many determinants of milk production, the intake of nutritional supplements with galactagogue properties, which stimulate lactation, could help women who experience breastfeeding difficulties. Plant extracts, such as fenugreek, have been used for millennia to promote milk production, while amino acids, such as arginine, have been used in livestock to increase lactation performance. However, scientific evidence of their galactagogue capacities remains limited and the mechanisms behind this effect are poorly understood. In a model of rats nursing large litters, we demonstrated that fenugreek and L-arginine had the ability to promote offspring growth by increasing milk production and modulating its composition. In addition, we verified the absence of deleterious metabolic effects in dams and offspring. A study of gene expression in the mammary and pituitary glands has allowed us to advance mechanistic paths to lay the physiological foundations for future clinical trials in women with lactation difficulties
