Evolution structurelle et économique des exploitations laitières du nord de l’Union européenne de 1990 à 2005 : des trajectoires contrastées

Abstract : Individual data of the European FADN are used to analyse the evolution of specialized dairy farms in six production areas: France (North West), Germany, England, Denmark and the Netherlands. Differences in labor productivity between these holdings are tied to the level of specialization, the use of outsourcing, the investment dynamics, the substitution of capital for labor. The production cost and the total gross proceeds are discussed to identify key strengths and weaknesses of the study areas. The relationship between labor productivity and remuneration of labor is analyzed (cash flow). French farms are favored by the low cost of land and quota, the food cost and the milk prices. They are penalized by a lower labor productivity and high mechanization costs. The dynamics of investment in buildings shows a certain confidence of French producers in the future.
