Relation between mood and the gut microbiota metabolite indole: results from the NutriNet-Santé study

Urinary indoxylsulfate concentrations were significantly higher in women with recurrent depressive symptoms. These results strongly suggest that indole production by the gut microbiota may play a role in the onset of mood disorders; however, the underlying mechanisms need to be investigated.
