Stratégie des organisations de producteurs face à la certification commerce équitable : cas des coopératives de la filière café au Costa Rica

Abstract : The Fair Trade (FT) experimented an accelarated growth in the recent years and the number of FT certified cooperatives known a rapid increase. Many studies analyzed the evolution of FT in the north and the effect of FT on the producers in the South. But although Producers’ Organizations (PO) is the level of decision of the certification, the determinant of their choice to enter in FT has been poorly documented. This paper aims at understanding the POs’ choice of entering in FT mechanism by characterizing and analyzing the POs’ strategies upon FT certification. Based on the analysis of original data collected from the cafe Cooperatives in Costa Rica, we identified different groups of POs according to their structural features and their level of participation to FT. We show that the PO’s choice regarding FT certification reflects different strategies which depend on their structural situation. We finally emphasize that the diversity of POs situation and strategy upon FT should be taking into account to maintain the efficiency of the FT mechanisms in term of support to small organizations in vulnerable regions.
