Report on stakeholder analysis and strategies for stakeholder engagement

To enhance the recognition of the role of wetlands in basin scale water resources management the WETwin project was initiated, aiming to improve drinking water and sanitation services of wetlands; to improve wetland community services while conserving or improving good ecological health; to adapt wetland management to changing environmental conditions; and most importantly, to integrate wetlands into river basin management. WETwin puts a lot of emphasis on stakeholder participation as part of the research process, to ensure the constructive engagement with the entire spectrum of societal actors throughout the project life cycle. It considers stakeholder participation as a cross-cutting continuous process throughout the project. Stakeholder analysis and the development of an engagement strategy have been conducted in each developing country case study wetland selected. In the European study wetlands only the stakeholder analysis took place. This document is the report of the stakeholder analysis and engagement strategy development process that took place during the first year of the WETwin project. It sets out the methodology and gives an account of the stakeholder analysis results and established engagement strategies, and site specific recommendations for further stakeholder engagement of the case study sites. It also presents the stakeholder analysis guidelines used in all case studies as well as the stakeholder engagement guidelines developed to ensure the systematic and constructive engagement of stakeholders throughout the project.
