Challenges nutritionnels : l’adaptation peut-elle passer par la programmation foetale ?

Abstract : Disturbances of the prenatal environment may have long-lasting impacts on the adaptive responses of the animal to future challenges. In ewes in late pregnancy, we tested the effects of a six-week long nutritional restriction (with a coarse hay (Restricted group) vs. regrowth hay (Control group) - without supplementation) on their performances, those of their lambs and on the latter's response to a similar nutritional challenge applied after weaning. Restricted ewes completed their gestation and lactation with similar body condition as controls at weaning of their lambs. The lambs of both groups had similar growth rates globally, including during the challenge, even though control lambs were the most affected by nutrient provision variability during the larger period running from weaning to challenge. The difference in lamb rates of urinary creatinine during challenge suggests a lower lean body mass in the restricted group. In conclusion, the nutritional restriction did not impair on the short-term the ewes and lambs' performance. However some elements suggest different metabolic adaptations between Restricted and Control lambs.
