Déterminants géographiques de l’utilisation des prairies en système traditionnel Salers : enseignements sur le fonctionnement du système fourrager

Abstract : In mountainous areas, the increase of farm area has consequences on field use and geographical diversity. Management of grassland areas should better account for the field geography. The aim of our study was to characterise the types of grassland used and to link them to the fields’ geographical characteristics (area, slope, distance to farmstead, altitude). We performed the study on the traditional Salers breeding system, adapted to the mountain environment, that produces both milk and store animals. In 2005, we surveyed 72 breeders about their grazing and cutting schedule and on the geographical characteristics of the 1586 fields of their farms. We constructed a typology of field use by principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. This typology was related to field geography by linear mixed models. We obtained 15 classes of use, 3 classes of cut only fields, 6 classes of cut and grazed fields and 6 classes of grazed only fields. Geographical characteristics determine field use according to a hierarchy: a severe slope limits cutting, a large area enables grazing on a cut field and cow grazing on grazed only fields, distance is a determinant for milked cow grazing. In some cases, two types of uses are observed for a same combination of geographical characteristics, underlining the flexibility of the mountainous forage system.
