Adiposity and winter feeding of dairy heifers

Abstract : While adiposity has been correlated to body condition in adult cows, no such observations does exist for heifers. 27 heifers (Holstein, n=15, Montblirade, n=12), 10.5 to 14 months old, received from end of november to april one out of three regimen, based on straw and barley, or staw, grass silage and aftermath, equivalent respectively to 2.9, 3.7 and 4.5 UF/animal/day. Body condition score and weight were estimated at the beginning and at the end of the period, and a biopsy of subcutaneous adipose tissue and a blood sample were performed in April. Winter mean growth rate was respectively -49, +257, +485 g/day. Mean diameter of adipocytes was 27.7 ( 2.1 (m, and loss of one point of body condition score corresponds to a 11 (m reduction of adipocyte diameter. The size of adipocytes was highly correlated (r=0.606, P=0.001) to the blood level of Non Esterified Fatty Acids. For femals with growth rate 200 g/d, low adipocytes diameter (18.9 (2.8 vs 32.8(2.2 (m with growth > 200g/d) and low FFA levels (0.238(0.035 vs 0.332(0.027 mEq/l) are indicative of the depletion of lipid reserves associated with low dietary inputs. A better estimation of body reserves status would help to optimize nutritional management of heifers in order to attain a target body condition favourable to subsequent performances.
