Déficit énergétique chez la vache laitière : indicateurs utilisés et niveau de sensibilisation des éleveurs et accompagnants techniques

Abstract : Negative energy balance (NEB) in dairy cows is related to physiological condition of the dairy cow, and feeding practices. Indicators are used in the farms to detect it and to minimize its negative effects on breeding performances and animal health. But dairy breeders and technical advisors perception and NEB management itself remain quite unknown. Surveys were conducted in January 2019 towards 67 dairy breeders and 14 technical advisors in order to better understand their perception of NEB, identify indicators used on-farm and have a good overview of breeders’ practices to manage NEB. This work pointed out a paradox: although some breeders could not define NEB, they had a good knowledge of the phenomenon, the high-risk periods and the detection indicators. They linked NEB with, in decreasing order, a lack of energy, detection indicators (body condition score (BCS), milk composition…), a poor valuation of feed ration, body reserve mobilization, ketosis, and difficulty facing critical periods. Identified high-risk periods include early lactation, seasonal challenges (e.g. drought), and dietary transitions. Over half of the respondent breeders already experienced NEB situations in their herd. BCS was the indicator breeders most commonly used whereas technical advisors preferred information from t production and milk composition data. Improving the feed ration by increasing dry matter or energy intake is the most quoted solution to minimize NEB. About 20% of respondent breeders would like to have easy-to-access indicators or devices to help them anticipating NEB risks. Biomarq’lait R&D program aims to provide such solutions. Results will be available in 2021.
