Bilan environnemental d’un système d’aquaponie carpes-salades.

Abstract : The combination of an hydroponic system (HS) with a recirculating aquaculture system is an integrated system called aquaponics (AS). Thus, plants recover nutrients released by fish, representing a system more environmentally friendly than if the two systems would run independently. Several AS are under development but poor information about their environmental performances is available. The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency of the use of the nutrients and the environmental impacts of a carplettuce AS set in a greenhouse. A mass balance of the nitrogen (N) and the phosphorus (P), and a life cycle assessment (LCA) were carried out, in comparison with a lettuce hydroponics system. The study lasted 52 days, corresponding to the time needed to obtain a marketable lettuce. With 24.6% N unaccounted for (probably due to denitrification) and 6.6% P unaccounted for (probably due to underestimation of the quantities of sediment), the mass balances calculated were in accordance with literature. The rates of N and P from feed recovered in fish and lettuce biomass were 19.3% and 20.6% respectively. The LCA pointed out that environmental impacts originate mainly in ingredients of fish feed and energy use. The gain of 1 kg of lettuce biomass in the AS had less environmental impacts than in the HS, on climate change, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, land use and cumulative energy demand. Nevertheless, a decrease in the water dependence indicator was not observed. The indicator dealing with the net primary production use pointed out the dependence of SA to natural resources, and more specifically to fish meal and fish oil, used in the fish feed. Compared to the use of chemical fertilizer in HS, the use of nutrients originating indirectly from fish feed in AS, seems decreasing impacts on climate change but increasing the use of natural resources in lettuce production
