Assessment of contextualized phosphorus recycling and its criticality

Résumé

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for food production. It comes from phosphate rocks which are used by more than 90% to produce phosphate mineral fertilizers for agricultural purposes. Phosphate rock is classified as critical for the European Union's economy. France has no phosphate rock reserves and must depend on foreign countries for its phosphate mineral fertilizer needs. P resource has no substitute in the fertilization field. Thus, to reduce this dependence and most importantly, the criticality of P, recycling is presently the only solution. P deposits (MAFOR or fertilizing mineral/organic matter from waste) are observed on French territory. However, the recycling of P from these deposits depends on the context of the spatial scale studied. This is not reflected in the evaluation of the recycling rates which are used in the raw material criticality assessment. Therefore, it is necessary to contextualize P recycling at the local scale. A model has been developed to contextualize P recycling. The objective is to be able to quantify the phosphorus, that is potentially used by farmers from the total quantities of deposits available at the territorial scale. The originality of the model lies in the integration of drivers which influence the use of P contained in MAFOR by farmers. Finally, two indicators are expected at the end of the model: the dependence on phosphate mineral fertilizers and the potential of meeting the territorial need using the recycled P.
