The role of school canteens in building more sustainable food systems. The impact pathways of the “Ma Cantine Autrement” programme in Montpellier
Abstract
This chapter presents the study of the impact pathways (IPs) of a school catering programme implemented by the city of Montpellier called “Ma Cantine Autrement” (MCA) on the different dimensions of a sustainable food system, using the Urbal approach. The first section presents the current challenges surrounding school catering in France and describes the MCA programme. The second section describes the steps followed by the approach: 1) characterization of the programme; 2) identification of IPs by the stakeholders; 3) synthesis and mapping of the IPs; and 4) identification of strategies to ensure the programme’s effectiveness and the conditions required for its scaling out. The third section presents and discusses the results: 1) the impacts, who they affect and how/where they materialize; 2) the barriers and enablers surrounding sustainability goals; 3) suggestions for action and the conditions required to deploy the programme in other communities (scaling out); and 4) social inclusion challenges. The final section summarizes the lessons learned to improve the implementation of the Urbal approach and provides learnings and prospects for MCA stakeholders.
