Farmer’s innovativeness, adoption capacity of complementary innovations and Farm Performance

Résumé

This study examines the relationship between innovativeness, adoption capacity and firm performance by applying a conditional efficiency framework and a structural econometric model on a sample of 567 Caribbean banana farms. Performance is measured by technical efficiency (TE), which reflects the ability of a decision-making unit to produce the maximum achievable output for a given bundle of inputs. The adoption capacity of the farm is measured by an adoption capacity score that takes into account the set of complementary agroecologial innovations that the farmer is willing to adopt. Farmer's Innovativeness is defined as the willingness (or the propensity) to innovate or the openness to new ideas. Applied to banana growers in French West Indies, the adoption capacity of the farm impact positively the TE score suggesting that a higher score of innovation adoption capacity improves technical efficiency score. In the other way, we find find that TE score also influences positively adoption capacity score. This suggests that farms close to the production frontier, are more likely to enlarge their adoption capacity by using new ideas to reach the frontier or to go beyond it. The results also show that innovativeness influences positively the adoption capacity score of the farm but not the TE. The adoption capacity score of complementary innovations is also related to other variables like farmer membership to a social group and high levels of education, but it is negatively associated with the farm frequent cash limitation.
