Climate change adaptation in Vietnam with mangroves and rice

Ecosystems and PES are very critical for ensuring sustainable development in Vietnam. The government of Vietnam will need to sustainably manage mangrove ecosystems, which play a critical role in protection of the environment and from climate change. In addition, the policy on PES will contribute to sustainability strategies, such as the National Strategies on Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Green Growth of Vietnam. Thus, this thesis provides a starting point for a long-term research to respond to the real and urgent need for organizations working to implement policies related to ecosystem and PES. Xuan Thuy National Park (Nam Dinh province, Vietnam) has a typical wetland ecosystem, including 2000 ha of mangroves that produce high economic values for the coastal communities (such as aquaculture, fisheries, and tourism). However, it is under a high threat of overexploitation and natural impacts (such as erosion and salinity). The main threats facing mangrove forests include removal, aquaculture, forest use, and freshwater diversion. The research ideas have been developed based on new knowledge and approaches that integrate natural and socio-economic dimensions of the mangroves ecosystems in coastal wetlands areas with community participation and policy inputs. The research is original since there are very limited case studies, and new tools and approaches for PES in mangrove ecosystems in Vietnam have been applied. Another major part of my thesis is to exploit the link between climate variations (minimum temperature, rainfall) and household agricultural production. Province-level rice yield and weather panel data are used to examine whether unmitigated climate change would have severe effects on rice yields. The estimates would then be used to project rice yields in the long run, applying a variety of climate models and emission scenarios. In doing so, my study would indicate to what extent adaptation techniques can mitigate the damage caused by climate change.
La thèse étudiera des problèmes de Services écosystémiques de la mangrove en abordant les points théoriques et des aspects empiriques qui pourront faire appel à de l'économétrie. La réflexion initiale sera basée sur le projet ci-dessous en anglais.
