Re-establishing the links between animal health and herd feeding: the use and spread of the Obsalim (R) method among dairy cattle farmers
Recréer des liens entre la santé et l’alimentation du troupeau: usages et diffusion de la méthode Obsalim® en élevage laitier bovin
Résumé
Organic livestock farmers are looking to improve animal health via alternative global approaches that focus on prevention. Feeding management is one of the main factors influencing herd health. This fact was the basis for the Obsalim (R) method, which was developed by a veterinarian and which relies on detailed observations of livestock. Here, we surveyed farmers to evaluate the method. We determined that its success arises from the efficiency of training (both at the individual and group level) and its effective application by livestock farmers (e.g., during feeding management or ration choice). The specific use of this relatively complex method depends on production objectives. Although Obsalim (R) has not yet been validated by scientific research, it has changed how animals are viewed and seems particularly relevant for grass-focused systems.
