L'utilisation des prairies permanentes au travers d'une enquête nationale sur leur place dans les systèmes d'alimentation

Abstract : Permanent grasslands support many agricultural (production and economy of breeding systems) and environmental (water quality, biodiversity, landscape ...) issues. In order to improve the knowledge on their potentialities towards the various stakes, a program to supply the technicians with references for the diagnosis of this type of meadow was led from 2008 to 2011. The first part of the program was aimed at identifying the functions of the permanent meadows in feeding systems, and studying the links with the natural conditions and agricultural practices. A survey of 78 farms representing various systems of breeding in the main grassland zones in plains and mid-mountains allowed the characterization of 1500 meadows. Their fodder functions were described by a profile of the seasonal feeding roles described in 5 periods. Twenty-four standard functions were defined by the analysis of their common points and their differences. The functions of permanent meadows, environmental conditions and practices were not independent. But the same function could be performed by meadows situated in different conditions. In addition, the same meadow may perform different functions. For every type of permanent meadow identified in another part of the working program, an outfit of the fodder functions which seem best adapted to each situation was proposed
