Évaluation de l’impact d’une exposition à un challenge thermique simulant une vague de chaleur estivale sur les performances et les réponses physiologiques des porcs en finition

Abstract : Based on predicted consequences of climate change, regional warming will increase the frequency, intensity and duration of summer heat waves in many countries. The objective of the present study was to describe the impact of a thermal challenge simulating a summer heat wave on performance and physiological responses of finishing pigs. A total of 45 pigs divided into three consecutive replicates of 15 castrated male pigs were studied for 42 days from 110-152 days of age. The TTT group was maintained at thermoneutrality (22°C) during the entire experimental period. The CTT, TCT and TTC groups were subjected to a challenge simulating a heat wave (5 days at 32 °C) respectively at 113, 127 or 141 days of age. The CCC group was exposed to three successive heat challenges at 113, 127 and 141 days of age. Over the entire experimental period, average daily gain was reduced for the CCC pigs compared to the TTT, CTT and TTC pigs (1,090 vs. 1,248 g / d; P < 0.05); an intermediate value was reported for the TCT group (1,184 g/d). Effects of heat stress on daily feed intake (DFI) depended on animal age (-12%, -20% and -27% respectively at 113, 127 and 141 d of age); this lower DFI was compensated only partially during the 7 days of recovery. An increase in ambient temperature on the first day of the thermal challenge caused a sudden increase in internal body temperature (Tint) followed by a gradual decrease. In the post-challenge period, pigs previously exposed to the heat challenge developed significant hypothermia, especially during the first measurement period. Based on DFI and Tint measurements, multiple exposures to elevated temperature allowed animals in the CC groups to cope better with thermal heat stress.
