Typology of water intakes of gravity irrigation channels

Abstract : Managers of irrigation canals of the Mediterranean arc require to have a finer management of their withdrawals due to the increase of the instream flow threshold set in the Water Law in 2006 and their special hydrological situation. The small "Authorized Syndical Associations" ASA are often unprepared for these new issues that may require technical, human and financial resources that seem out of reach. The action in which this study falls aims at proposing a methodology of equipment of irrigation canal intakes in the rivers adapted to these small organizations in order to guarantee the return of the instream flow and to optimize the flow taken with respect to the allowed withdrawal. This report presents the results of the first phase of this action which consists of a typology of gravity intakes based on a diversified panel of 18 water intakes encountered in 4 departments of the Mediterranean arc. This presentation begins with a definition of the concept of hydraulic controllability of a water intake and a description of the operation of a standard water intake development to meet the constraints related to the instream flow and the allowed water withdrawal without any automation or human intervention (Chapter 2). Then, the Chapter 3 includes the methodology used for field surveys and intakes modelling. From the analysis of the studied sites (Chapter 4), we have identify different configurations of water intakes and have elaborated an inventory of the organs of regulation of the returned flow and the debit taken which are: the diversion threshold, the outlet of return of the instream flow, and the structure of regulation of the flow taken (Chapter 5). The study concludes (Chapter 6) with an assessment of the vulnerability of water intakes to the risk of non-respect of the flow instream and a typology of adaptability of the water intakes compared to the standard layout presented in Chapter 2.
