Hiérarchie dans les groupes de truies gestantes : méthodes de calcul, caractéristiques et lien avec les données d'alimentation

Résumé : The aim of this project was to study the hierarchy in groups of pregnant sows and its relation to the data recorded by automatic feeders and animal-production indicators (parity, weight). Initial analysis was performed for four groups of 18 (±1) sows at the end of gestation (days 71-106) whose access to the feeders was restricted beginning on day 79 to exacerbate agonistic behaviour in order to observe the expression of dominance in the group. Six hours of continuous observations were collected and enabled calculation of scores used to classify the sows by dominance order, as well as several sociometric variables. Two methods for calculating dominance order were compared (elo-score and David’s score), and they yielded similar rankings (R = 0.96, P < 0.01). The hierarchy remained stable within a batch and across one gestation (Stab = 0.996 ± 0.001), quite steep (Raid = 0.54 ± 0.09) (i.e. large absolute differences in overall success in winning dominance encounters between adjacently ranked individuals), and appeared to be transitive and linear (H’ = 0.67 ± 0.08, Ptri = 0.97 ± 0.02) (i.e. if individual A dominates individual B, and B dominates C, then A dominates C). The data were supplemented with additional data from four batches followed at the beginning and end of gestation (days 13-20 and 99-106). Dominance order was strongly positively correlated with feeder order (R = 0.69, P < 0.01) and strongly negatively correlated with weight (R = -0.66, P < 0.01), parity (R = -0.75, P < 0.01) and the number of visits to feeders (R = -0.19, P < 0.01). However, no correlation between hierarchy and time spent in the feeder was found.
