Which progress on feed efficiency in fattening young bulls?

Improving the feed efficiency of cattle is a crucial issue, to satisfy the worldwide growing demand for meat, reduce competition for resources and increase farm profitability. To study the feasibility of selecting this trait, the BEEFALIM 2020 program aims to understand the physiologic and genetic determinants of feed efficiency in fattening young bulls (YB). Between 2015 and 2019, 588 Charolais young bulls, offspring of bulls evaluated on individual control (IC), have been fattened on 4 experimental farms. The animals have been fed ad libitum with two contrasted diets, mainly composed of corn silage or grass silage. Three criteria of feed efficiency have been studied: the feed conversion efficiency (FCE), the residual feed intake (RFI) and the residual daily gain (RDG). The animals fattened with the corn silage had significantly higher average daily gain (ADG) (1.62 kg/day vs 1.39 kg/day), final body weight at the end of the control period (FW) (724 kg vs 673 kg) and daily feed intake (FI) (9.84kg/day vs 9.46 kg/day). The young bulls fattened with the corn silage had a significant higher FCE (0.166 kg/kg DM vs 0.147 kg/kg DM). However, a strong interaction was observed between the cohort and the diet. The observed variability of grass silage quality, according to harvest conditions and dates, could have impacted animal performances. The genetic analyses showed a moderate heritability on the three feed efficiency criteria (0.18 for FCE and 0.22 for RFI and RDG). No genetic correlations were found between RFI and RDG or between RFI and FCE, but a strong correlation exists between FCE and RDG (1.00). Moreover, RFI was genetically correlated with the daily feed intake (0.79), average daily gain (ADG) (0.57) and the final weight at the end of the control period (FW) (0.43). FCE and RDG are strongly correlated with ADG (0.79 and 0.75 respectively) and moderately with the FI (0.31 and 0.23, respectively) and the FW (0.35 and 0.26 respectively). Genetic correlations estimated between the bulls in IC, fed with concentrates, and their offspring, fed with silage, were 0.58 for RFI, 0.82 for RDG and 0.77 for FCE. These results demonstrate that a genetic improvement of beef cattle is possible on this trait, through a genetic index combining feed efficiency and production criteria.
