Climate care cattle farming initiative

Résumé

The cattle sector is a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG = CH4 + N2O + CO2) and ammonia (NH3) emissions from rumination of cows, manure, and in a less extend, from grassland and corn cultivation including machinery. The www.CCCFarming.eu project focusses on the processes within the dairy farm itself, which is about two-thirds of the GHG emissions from this sector. Of GHG, the major component to deal with is methane in the barn and manure storage, of which about 80% is expected to come from the cow and 20% from the manure. The project aim is to develop climate smart cattle farming systems reducing GHG and ammonia emissions while maintaining the social-economic outlook of the farm business. The following activities are performed: Kitchen table interviews to learn about farm families’ attitudes towards dealing with GHG and ammonia emissions on farm level in 8 European countries; Gathering field data about the nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon balances from 60 farms with three different NPC tools, and estimates of GHG and ammonia emissions by a so-called simplified measurement method (especially within the housing), and, in development, application of drones; Examine the socio-economic and political aspects of the possible interventions identified; Develop holistic farm systems which are targeted at meeting the socio-economic and environmental goals; Develop a set of good practices and techniques to be combined in farm systems, to be checked and evaluated on pilot and experimental farms. The progress of the project activities will be explained and illustrated by a series of presentations during this seminar.
