Precision feeding, recent advances for gestating sows and dairy cows

Résumé

Precision feeding aims to define the right feeding strategy according to individual’s nutrient requirements. Few years ago, an individual feeding strategy for gestating sows based on energy and lysine adjustment of daily supplies has been shown to reduce feed costs and environmental loads. The nutritional requirements were calculated thanks to an updated version of the InraPorc model requiring input data (i.e. sows’ characteristics). A third variable to take into account during the adjustment (i.e. phosphorus requirement) is currently being added into the model and simulations are being run. More recently, on one hand the integration of the individual and daily physical activity measurements in the calculation of the energy requirements is becoming possible thanks to the development of a software able to analyse automatically and continuously the sow’s postures. On the other hand, machine learning algorithms allows to predict daily nutritional requirements using only data measured by sensors or automatons. For example, energy and lysine requirements can be predicted thanks to physical activity and feeder data, respectively. Combining these data with the sows’ characteristics improved the prediction accuracy. This result indicate a possible way to simplify the application of precision feeding on farm. Finally, the long term effect of a precision feeding strategy on the sows’ performances is being evaluated in two different experimental farms. Concerning dairy cows, individualized feeding strategies are more complicated to set up and models or criteria to calculate precisely the individual daily requirements are not available. Preliminary experiments are taking place to determine criteria to adjust the energy of each cow’s ration, at the scale of the week, by varying the amount of concentrates distributed in the automatic feeder. Furthermore, biomarkers and production variables are being screened to determine if they can be used in early lactation to predict the lactation persistency, and then adapt the feeding strategy and the reproduction timing based on the objective of the farmer and the potential of each cow. Precision feeding is therefore a burning and growing topic for farm animals, with promising results.
