Can studying the health of livestock systems be a way to improve their resilience?
Résumé
Livestock systems are facing multiple challenges, particularly economical, zoonosis and climatic hazards. These
crises, caused by human activities and population growth, remind humanity that human, animal and ecosystem health
are interdependent (developing notions of One Health, Eco Health, planetary health, etc.). The farm scale seems
particularly suited to a comprehensive approach to health in agriculture. A farm constitutes a system as such and it
is on this scale that farmers make decisions, experiment and establish interactions between humans and non-humans
(animals, plants, environment, etc.), which have an impact on health. The aim of this study is to characterize farm
health (definition and indicators) and to show to what extent this approach can be used to reason about the resilience
and sustainability of livestock systems. We first built a framework for analysing the health of a farm, which was
then tested in the field. For this purpose, 18 sheep, cow and goat dairy farms – claiming to be agroecological- were
monitored in the Massif Central (France), for 2 years (2021-2022). We assessed the soil health (physical, chemical,
and biological indicators), grassland health (biodiversity, yield, resilience, products quality, etc.), animal health
(production, reproduction, feeding, behaviour, buildings, and health) and farmer health (survey on psychological
health) on each farm. We proposed an assessment of the health status of the monitored farms and highlighted their
good health. We also discussed the value of health approaches in promoting the sustainability and resilience of farming
systems. Moreover, the analysis of the management practices implemented by the farmers and the functioning of the
system indicates that it is the coherence of the system that promotes health. This work also highlighted the interest of
the notion of health for studying farms. Health, thanks to its holistic vision, allows the study of the decision-making
system, the integration of the farmers’ relationship with nature and to show the coherence of the systems.
