Study of the acceptability of pig immunocastration to French consumers

Étude de l’acceptabilité de l’immunocastration des porcs par les consommateurs français

Résumé

Since 1 January 2022, castrating piglets without anesthesia has been banned in France. Various alternatives to this practice were then proposed to professionals: some maintain surgical castration with pain management (anaesthesia), others replace it with nonsurgical castration (immunocastration), and still others suppress it (entire male). Among these alternatives, immunocastration has seen limited adoption due to concerns about consumer acceptability. A survey was thus performed from June-November 2022 to assess its acceptability among French consumers. To this end, 297 French people participated in an online survey conducted by the Laboratoire d'Innovation Territorial Ouest Territoires d'Elevage (LIT OUESTEREL) association, in partnership with IFIP and INRAE. This survey revealed that these consumers were unfamiliar with the concept of immunocastration: 95 % of respondents had never heard of it. Without any explanation of the concept, few respondents said they would be willing to buy products made from the meat of immunocastrated pigs (9 %), and most showed hesitation (76 %) or even resistance (15 %). After a brief explanation of immunocastration, 36 % of the respondents finally stated their readiness to consume meat from immunocastrated pigs, while 57 % remained hesitant and 7 % continued to express reluctance. This study suggests that French consumers would accept meat from immunocastrated pigs if they had been informed about immunocastration beforehand. By determining how to communicate this information effectively to them, some of the reluctance of pork professionals to develop this practice could be overcome.
